The impact on the world’s poorest people
Though their lifestyles contribute little or nothing in terms of carbon emissions, poor people around the world will suffer most of the worst impacts of global warming. Most will be related to changes in climate – increase in severity and length of droughts, more severe cyclones or typhoons and an increased risk of flooding in some areas. Rising sea levels will inundate coastal areas, which often have high populations. There will be a decrease in water availability for irrigation and water supplies as melt water from glaciers reduces and rainfall becomes less predictable. In addition there will be changing patterns of disease and pests, reduced availability of oil products and food shortages.
