Tipping points
Scientists have identified a number of positive feedback mechanisms – processes whereby the complex interaction of our planet’s natural cycles and systems mean that climate change will accelerate itself, irrespective of humankind’s actions once certain tipping points are reached. They include the melting of the Arctic sea ice and the Greenland ice sheet, large-scale damage to the Amazon rain forest and the strengthening of the El Niño climate system.
