Home temperatures
The average temperature in UK homes has risen by 4° or 5° C in the past 2 decades. People have become used to wearing T shirts during winter months and turning up the thermostat. This is a very wasteful use of energy and money. Focus on keeping living areas warm, but halls and bedrooms cool. Get efficient thermostats and use them. Enjoy wearing good jumpers and thermal vests and be comfortable with lower temperatures in our homes.
Radiators work most efficiently on internal walls. Unfortunately many houses have them sited underneath windows. Placing a shelf over radiators below windows can help reduce the heat loss. Whenever you plan redecoration or building work, try and re-site them. Place aluminium foil or card covered with foil behind radiators to reduce heat loss. Bleed radiators regularly so they work efficiently.
