Church action
There are all kinds of ways in which Christians can respond to the challenges that climate change brings. One or two services a year will not even begin to generate an adequate response. One or two people could be asked to lead the church in their response. Church leaders can encourage home groups to study bible notes together, to measure their carbon footprints and to walk together in making lifestyle changes.
The church could choose to actively support Christian organisations working to respond to climate change. Individuals could be encouraged to attend training courses; to visit and learn from what other churches are doing and to establish meetings to debate a moral response. Anglicans and Methodists have used the period of Lent to focus on personal response to climate change or have called for Lent to be a time of fasting from carbon emissions. Inter-church members could meet and study together in small groups.
The Anglican Church has encouraged all churches to measure their carbon footprint and to seek ways of reducing this – the initial challenge was to reduce this by 40% by 2050.
