Car travel
In the UK our use of car travel for both personal and work travel has doubled since the mid 1970s. Two or three car households are now common and people are travelling further distances to work (mainly due to the high cost of housing in the South East of the country). Car travel accounts for about a fifth of the average carbon footprint so its impact is considerable. You can reduce fuel consumption by careful driving. When buying a new or second hand car, choose models with low fuel consumption. You can also switch to alternative fuels if they are available in your area – LPG or biodiesel, or chose an electric car for local travel.
