Food choices
The choices we make in selecting our foods become more complex the more we understand about their origins; how are they produced, how are they traded, how many air miles has their transport consumed… the options are endless. Shopping is not just a matter of cost, availability and taste but should also involve ethical decision making.
The LOAF principle (developed by CEL) is a helpful one to remember. Look for products that as far as possible are:
L – locally produced (less air miles and supporting local farmers),
O – organically grown (fertiliser use releases nitrates, a powerful greenhouse gas),
A – animal friendly (ideally free range livestock grown in comfortable conditions)
F – fairly traded
